The City of Houghton Police Department is hosting a 5K fun run on Saturday at Kestner Park in support of Special Olympics of Michigan and to raise awareness for Area 39 teams, volunteers, and coaches.
The event serves as a community fundraiser to generate attention and support for Special Olympics of Michigan and local Area 39 programs. It is not part of the competitive season but rather an opportunity for the broader community to show support for the athletes, volunteers, and coaches.
Last year’s 5K in Houghton, organized by the police department, raised over $5,000 for Special Olympics and ranked as a top fundraiser in the state.
Area 39 returned to the region in 2025, serving more than 60 athletes from Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, and Gogebic counties. The program began with a bowling team and expanded to include snowshoeing, bocce ball, and basketball.
Athletes like Mindy Behrmann and Tom Anderson experienced the joy of competition and community connection through Area 39’s programs.
“Last year was so much fun,” said Behrmann, who participated in bowling, track and field, and snowshoeing. “It was very exciting. I was excited to be a part of something so big that hasn’t happened in a very long time.”
Anderson echoed the sentiment, saying the experience connected him with new friends and supportive coaches and volunteers.
“It’s a great experience and I think if you have anybody that needs to be in it, it’s a good opportunity for your kids to come and do it,” Anderson said.
Mike Behrmann, co-director of Area 39, emphasized the importance of maintaining the program’s fundraising momentum.
“The Houghton Police Department was one of the top fundraisers in the entire state,” Behrmann said. “We want to keep that trajectory going.”
Co-director Naomi Behrmann highlighted the community support that made last year’s event successful.
“Great t-shirts and they auctioned up a few things, raffled a few things and then of course there was the run and a lot of fun participants,” Naomi Behrmann said. “It was great that the whole community made it out here.”
Funds raised support local events, practices, uniforms, and more for Area 39 athletes and Special Olympics programs across Michigan.
