Isle Royale National Park has closed four campsites on the island’s northern end after recent reports of wolves pawing and digging at tents and camping equipment.
The closure, which began Aug. 28 and continues through Oct. 31, affects Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin and Caribou Island campgrounds. The restrictions extend to off-trail camping and include all tent, group and hammock camping. Only 13 tent sites and 8 group sites are affected by the closure.
Park officials remind visitors that shelters remain available in the affected areas, and fall continues to offer an excellent time to experience Isle Royale. Park Superintendent Danice Swanke emphasized that alternative camping options allow visitors to safely enjoy the park during the closure period.
The National Park Service implemented the closure to reduce potentially dangerous interactions between humans and wildlife. This marks the second time the park has closed northern campsites due to wolf activity.
To prevent wildlife encounters, the park requires visitors to properly store food and scented items. At the start of the visitor season, the park implemented updated food storage regulations requiring hard-sided, animal-resistant containers. Food storage lockers have been installed in certain areas, and backpack storage cages near Rock Harbor and Three Mile campgrounds require visitors to store backpacks when away from camp.
All food, trash and scented items must be stored and packed out of the park.
