Andrew Benintendi’s RBI single off Drew Sommers in the seventh inning gave the White Sox a 4-3 victory over the Tigers Saturday. Eduardo Valencia homered for Detroit. Troy Melton struggled into the fifth inning, and was charged with three runs on nine hits.
The Tigers host the White Sox again today. Drew Anderson will start against Sean Burke. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The loss dropped the Tigers four-and-a-half games behind the Sox in the race for the Central Division title. The Twins and Guardians are just a half-game further back. The Tigers now trail the Rangers by a half-game in the race for the final American League Wild Card playoff berth.
The Brewers topped the Dodgers 4-1 Saturday. William Contreras and Joey Ortiz homered. Jacob Misiorowski gave up a run over six innings.
The Brewers visit the Dodgers again this afternoon. Logan Henderson will pitch against Tarik Skubal.
Milwaukee has purchased the contract of utility player Jonathan Ornelas from the Athletics. Jihwan Bae was designated for assignment.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League semifinals wrap up today at 5:00, when Garnet Garage takes on Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton at the Houghton field. Their best-of-three series is tied at one win per team. The winner will face Northern Driveline in the championship series beginning Tuesday.
Biking
At Saturday’s Great Deer Chase bike races at the Swedetown Trails Saturday…
- Joel Bretzlaff from Highland, Michigan won the long race, 25 seconds ahead of Houghton’s Isaac Oldenberg. Megan Broeders from Negaunee took the women’s title.
- Kody Nutting from Kalamazoo claimed the medium race, with a narrow 1.2-second margin over Murphy Mallow of Hancock. Kaytlin Roell from Marquette was the fastest woman.
- Renn Taivalkoski of Calumet earned the crown in the short race. Bradley Schuett from South Range was second, and Becca Subert from Hancock won the women’s title.
