A Houghton County family is raising funds to support an assault victim’s medical bills.
In June Savannah Johnson was assaulted in North Carolina by a 26-year-old marine named Isaac Ruiz. Johnson recently moved to North Carolina for work after graduating in the spring from Northern Michigan University. Ruiz has since been arrested with bond set at 1 million dollars.
Since the incident Johnson underwent a five-hour surgery to treat injuries such as a fractured vertebrae and damaged throat. A Spotfund campaign organized by Johnson’s family shares Savannah has fluid in her lungs and remains on a ventilator. Due the severe nature of the injuries Johnson sustained the family has set a goal to raise 100,000 dollars. As of July 14th, the campaign has raised more than 30,000 dollars.
