MLB
Tarik Skubal struck out eight in his first start at CoMerica Park in two months, and the Tigers shaded the White Sox 4-3 last night. Skubal pitched into the sixth, and allowed three runs on seven hits. Drew Anderson relieved him, and got the win when Kerry Carpenter doubled home Dillon Dingler and Riley Greene with the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Vierling hit a two-run homer in the first inning.
The Tigers host the Sox again today. Troy Melton will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
As expected, the Tigers added Wenceel Pérez to the injured list yesterday. He was hurt during a workout when a resistance band slipped off its hook and hit him in the face, just below his left eye. He suffered an orbital fracture, but his vision is not expected to be affected. Prospect Trei Cruz was brought up from Toledo, and struck out three times in his major league debut last night.
Justin Verlander’s return to the Tigers’ rotation is on indefinite hold. Verlander was scheduled to start tomorrow’s game after missing almost all of the season with hip inflammation. But, in a bullpen session on Wednesday, he suffered a left hamstring strain. Manager A.J. Hinch said yesterday that a full rehab regimen will need to be implemented, and that Verlander will be out for weeks. At age 43, Verlander is the oldest player in the major leagues this season.
The Brewers lost to the Braves 3-2 last night. Jacob Misiorowski gave up two runs over six innings, and suffered his third loss of the season. He struck out seven. Brice Turang had two hits and drove in both Milwaukee runs.
The Brewers visit the Braves again this afternoon. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Chris Sale.
