High School
In softball tournament action yesterday…
- Division Four District 98 – L’Anse won the district title. The Purple Hornets defeated Baraga 15-3 in their semifinal game, sealing the win with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. They went on to outscore Forest Park 18-3 in the championship match. L’Anse will face the District 100 champion in a regional game next Saturday at noon at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. The District 100 tournament will be played today, with Munising, Rapid River, Newberry and Superior Central competing.
- Division Three – Calumet claimed their first-ever district crown. The Copper Kings eliminated Jeffers 12-4 in their semifinal game, bookending their scoring with five runs in the first, and five in the seventh. Chloe Coppo had three hits including a pair of doubles, drove in two runs, and scored three times. Danni Stites struck out nine to get the complete-game win. Pearl Raffaelli drove in two runs for the Jets. Westwood routed Gwinn 19-0 in the other semifinal. Calumet walked off the championship game 4-3 when Bethany Garrow raced home when the Patriots misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Jailyn Poshak in the bottom of the eighth. Garrow had two hits for the Kings. Stites again earned the complete-game win, striking out 10. The Copper Kings head to Cheboygan for their regional game next Saturday at noon. Their opponent will be determined today, in a district tournament including Cheboygan, Boyne City, Charlevoix and Elk Rapids.
In softball today…
- In Division Two at Kingsford – Houghton faces the host Flivvers in one semifinal. Negaunee will take on Escanaba in the second semifinal, and the championship game will follow.
- In Division Four District 97 at the Bone Yard – Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Gogebic in the first semifinal at 12:00. Hancock will play Ontonagon in the second semifinal around 2:00. We’ll broadcast both semifinals on Lite 96.3 Houghton’s Breeze beginning around 11:45, and will also broadcast the championship game if Lake Linden or Hancock advance.
The baseball district tournament opens today…
- In Division Four at L’Anse – L’Anse faces Lake Linden-Hubbell in the first semifinal at 10:00. Ontonagon plays Jeffers around 12:30, with the championship game around 3:00.
- In Division Three at the Driving Park – Calumet faces Superior Central in the first semifinal at 12:00, and Hancock takes on Westwood around 2:00. Coverage will begin around 11:45 on KBear 102.3, and we’ll also broadcast the championship game around 4:00 if Calumet or Hancock advance.
- In Division Two at Kingsford – Houghton faces the host Flivvers in the first semifinal at 11:00. Coverage will begin around 10:45 on 97.7 The Wolf. Negaunee plays Escanaba in the second semifinal, and we’ll broadcast the championship game if Houghton advances.
Remember that baseball and softball start times could change, depending on the length of earlier games. Tickets must be purchased through the MHSAA’s online vendor at GoFan.co.
The U.P. Track Championships for all divisions will be staged tomorrow at Kingsford.
NBA
The Spurs quieted the Thunder 118-91. The Western Conference final is tied 3-3, and will be decided tomorrow night in Oklahoma City.
NHL
The Hurricanes host the Canadiens tonight. Carolina leads the Eastern Conference final 3-1.
MLB
Wenceel Pérez’s solo home run in the second inning gave Detroit an early lead, but the Tigers fell to the Angels 7-1 yesterday. Jack Flaherty struck out nine, but gave up three runs before leaving in the sixth inning, and fell to 0-8 on the season.
The Tigers visit the White Sox tonight. Troy Melton will start against Erick Fedde. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Add yet another Tigers pitcher to the injured list. Kenley Jansen has been diagnosed with pelvic inflammation after he had to leave Wednesday’s game. Drew Sommers has been called up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and welcome the Astros tonight. Coleman Crow will pitch against Kai-Wei Teng.
