Nothing pairs better with a donut than a cup of coffee. Well, maybe cops pair well with donuts too.
On Friday, the City of Houghton Police Department invites the community to Coffee with a Cop at Dunkin on M-26. Lt. Nick Roberts says engaging with residents is an important part of law enforcement. Connecting with people helps the community feel more comfortable coming to law enforcement in an emergency.
“We’ll invite everybody over. We’ll see who shows up. Everybody has to get their day started. It’s a meet and greet with the community,” Roberts said. “If they have any questions, if they just want to get to know us, there’ll be other officers too. We’ll invite all of the departments over.”
Roberts adds that interacting with kids and seniors from the area is a favorite aspect of the job for most officers. Teaching young people how to ask for help and keeping seniors safe has many rewards, including riveting conversations about area crime, traffic on the roads or just some time to catch up.
The Coffee with a Cop event at Dunkin in Houghton will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday. The event will end at 10am.
