Baraga County Shelter Home received more than $200,000 to support emergency shelter facilities for domestic violence survivors.
In May, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority awarded a $223,807 infrastructure grant to the Baraga County Shelter Home. The grant award represents significant public support for a shelter that has served individuals and families in Baraga County since 1984.
Lack of funding sources can harm a shelter’s ability to serve domestic violence survivors. By providing a safe space for women, children and survivors, Baraga County Shelter Home offers people a place to pause before taking a next step.
The MSHDA Office of Rental Assistance and Homeless Solutions grant award is part of a $3 million one-time allocation to support critical infrastructure and capacity needs for emergency shelters across Michigan.
Baraga County Shelter Home expects the funds will support more than 20 projects identified by staff, such as replacing a furnace that was damaged by flooding in 2025.
Executive Director Celeste Hendrickson adds the shelter hopes to add additional space and make the home more accessible to disabled survivors.
