Laurium breaks ground at the site of the new department of public works. In February 2025, Laurium experienced a great loss when the department of public works caught fire. The village will construct the new garage near the old location, next to the existing salt shed. The former garage site will be parking for the nearby George Gipp Arena and baseball fields. The project will cost 3.6 million dollars and has been fully funded through insurance payouts and grants. When completed the facility will house a cold storage bay and heated bay for making in-house repairs, as well as house the Laurium the DPW and Recreation supervisor offices. The project estimates the new facility will create 14,500 square feet of space for the Laurium department of public works.
