High School
In high school volleyball last night…
- Houghton got past Jeffers 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-17, 18-25, 15-10). Claire Johnson led the Gremlins with 14 kills. Lydia Williams had 11 kills, 17 assists, 19 digs, 3 blocks, and Emmy Pietila had 40 digs and 4 aces. Mia Nordstrom paced the Jets with 16 kills and 6 aces, and Aili Kinnunen added 5 kills. Kylee Kangas had 12 assists, and Aya Keteri had 16 digs.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-13). Kiera Isaacson had 13 kills and 14 digs for the Blue Bolts. Laila Bell added 6 kills, and Sylvie Kentala ended the night with 19 assists.
- L’Anse swept Bessemer 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-23).

Hancock’s football game against Westwood will be played as scheduled Friday. The Bulldogs have been struggling with low numbers and injuries this season, but announced yesterday that they have enough healthy players to field a team.

College Football
Two Michigan Tech football players have been honored by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their play in Saturday’s victory over Davenport.
Chase Koch was named Defensive Player of the Week. He intercepted a pass, and made eight tackles. Kicker Avery Kucharski was tabbed as Special Teams Player of the Week, after recording three field goals.
MLB
The Dodgers edged the Brewers 2-1 in the opening game of the National League Championship Series last night. Blake Snell held the Crew to one hit over eight innings, while striking out 10. Milwaukee’s only run came in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Chourio. The Brewers then loaded the bases, but Brice Turang struck out to end the game. That series continues tonight in Milwaukee.
The Mariners grabbed a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series with a 10-3 victory over the Blue Jays. That set continues tomorrow night in Seattle.
The Tigers announced yesterday that they have extended manager A.J. Hinch’s contract. The deal was sealed earlier this summer. No details have been released. At a press conference yesterday, Tigers’ GM Scott Harris also said that team owner Chris Ilitch is prepared to spend the money it will take to keep starter Tarik Skubal with the team after he becomes a free agent at the end of next season.
NHL
The Red Wings made their shots count, and shaded the Maple Leafs 3-2 yesterday afternoon. Goals by Dylan Larkin and James van Riemsdyk gave Detroit a 2-0 third-period lead. Toronto came back to tie the contest, but Mason Appleton netted the game-winner with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Cam Talbot made 38 saves, as the Leafs outshot the Wings 40-15.
The Wings host the Panthers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons play their next preseason game tonight at Cleveland. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks wrap up their preseason schedule at home tonight against the Thunder.
Milwaukee now has three Antetokounmpos on its roster. Alex Antetokounmpo has been signed to a two-way contract that will allow him to swing between the Bucks and their G League team in Oshkosh. He joins Giannis and Thanasis in the first-ever instance of an NBA team listing three brothers on its active roster.
NFL
In last night’s NFL games…
- The Falcons upended the Bills 24-14.
- The Bears edged the Commanders 25-24. Jake Moody’s 38-yard field goal as time expired was the game-winner.

Lions’ safety Brian Branch has been suspended for one game, after sucker-punching Chiefs’ receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the handshake line after Sunday night’s game. Detroit coach Dan Campbell called Branch’s action “inexcusable,” but Branch indicated he will appeal the suspension.
