In high school football last night…
- Houghton routed Hancock 42-0 in the annual Copper Bowl game.
- Calumet upended Negaunee 33-18. The Copper Kings scored on their opening possession, when Ben Anderson capped a 54-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run. They increased their lead when Oskar Loukus intercepted a Kyle Waterman pass, and returned it 20 yards for a score. Negaunee’s Evan DellAngelo returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to put the Miners on the board, and Calumet led 13-6 at halftime. The Miners narrowed the gap with a three-yard Vince Tincknell run early in the third quarter, but a failed two-point conversion left Calumet with a two-point lead. The Copper Kings responded with a 94-yard drive that ended with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Halonen to Keith Koivisto. Negaunee counterpunched with another three-yard Vince Tincknell scoring run, but another failed two-point conversion attempt left them trailing 20-18. Calumet lengthened the lead with a 40-yard Halonen touchdown run. Down by nine, Negaunee’s last hopes fickered out when the Calumet defense held them to no gain on the ensuing possession. The Kings took over on downs at the Negaunee 25, and sealed the win with a 14-yard Ben Anderson touchdown run. It was Calumet’s first victory over Negaunee since 2019. Halonen completed both his passing attempts for 72 yards and a touchdown. He also led the team with 110 rushing yards. Trent Anderson added 76 yards on the ground, and Ben Anderson rushed for 65 yards and kicked three extra points.
