High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Calumet dropped two close games to Negaunee, 4-3 and 5-4. Calumet grabbed an early lead in the first game, but the Miners scored three in the sixth, and one in the seventh to come from behind. Liam Pomroy had two hits and drove in two runs for the Copper Kings. Matt Frantti had a double. The Miners came back late in the second game, as well, scoring twice in the top of the sixth. Calumet got just three hits, including a double by Nathan Londo.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ironwood 32-4 and 16-4.
- Jeffers defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 11-0. Blake Heltunen had two hits. Cody Turner had a triple, and drove in two runs. Three Jets pitchers combined to give up just three hits over five innings.
- Ontonagon v the Gogebic Miners – no report.
In softball…
- Calumet split a twinbill with Westwood, winning game one 13-3, and dropping game two 8-6. In the first contest, Bethany Garrow had three hits, including a triple. Chloe Coppo and Molly Erkkila each had two. Lena Mhyren got the win in the circle. Coppo added three hits in the second contest, including a triple.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell took two from Ironwood by identical 10-0 scores. Emily Jokela struck out 19 in the opener, and hit a home run and a pair of singles. Payton Goldsworty had a pair of doubles, and Cleo Milkey tripled. Goldsworthy struck out 14 in the nightcap, and had a single and a double. Jokela again had two singles and a home run. Kyara Mills had two hits.

At the Range Bank Westwood Golf Invitational yesterday, Calumet took the boys team title. Houghton was second, L’Anse-Baraga sixth and West Iron County ninth. The Copper Kings finished second to Negaunee on the girls side. West Iron County was fifth. Individual scores were not reported.

MLB
Javier Báez’ three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Tigers to a 10-9 victory over the Red Sox last night. The blast was the second of the night for Báez, who drove in six runs. It came after each team scored once in the 10th, and Beau Brieske allowed two runs in the top of the 11th. Spencer Torkelson hit his 11th home run of the season.
The Tigers host the Red Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Hunter Dobbins. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has called starter Keider Montero back up from Toledo, and sent reliever Chase Lee back down.
The Tigers will finish the season without reliever Jason Foley. Foley led the team in saves last season, but struggled this spring and was assigned to Toledo. He went on the injured list last month with a shoulder strain, and has undergone surgery.
The Brewers collected just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Guardians last evening. Quinn Priester took the tough loss, giving up a run on three hits over five innings.
The Brewers visit the Guardians again this afternoon. Logan Henderson will start against Gavin Williams.
NBA
In NBA conference semifinal play yesterday…
- The Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference final with a 114-105 victory over the Cavaliers. Indiana wins that semifinal series 4-1.
- The Thunder got past the Nuggets 112-105. Oklahoma City takes a 3-2 lead in that Western Conference semifinal.

- The Knicks visit the Celtics. New York leads that Eastern Conference semifinal 3-1.
- The Timberwolves host the Warriors. Minnesota is 3-1 in that Western Conference semifinal.

Former Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland has agreed to become GM of the Los Angeles Kings. Holland guided Detroit to four Stanley Cup titles, then spent five seasons leading the Oilers. For the past year, he’s been working in the NHL office.
