High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Houghton swept Westwood 10-0 and 14-6. The first game ended after four innings because of the mercy rule. Ethan Hainault drove in five runs. Latham Salmi struck out six to get the win. The Patriots jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the nightcap, but the Gremlins responded with a balanced attack that saw eight players drive in at least one run. Hainault got the win on the mound.
- Ironwood took two from Ewen-Trout Creek, 23-12 and 22-6.
In softball
- Calumet downed Houghton 10-0 and 8-4. Molly Erkkila drove in four runs on four hits in the opener, including a home run. She drove in four runs, and scored twice. Lena Myhren held the Gremlins to three hits over six innings. Chloe Coppo, Bethany Garrow, Kaydence Christopherson, and Jailyn Poshak each collected two hits for Calumet. Kaylee Newsom earned the complete-game win in game two. Garrow, Coppo, Jaysa Wilks and Amiina Tarnowski each had two hits. Estella Soumis had two hits for the Gremlins.
- Jeffers dropped two to the Houghton JV, 14-9 and 15-4.
- Hancock took two from the Gogebic Miners, 10-2 and 11-1. Sadie Biekkola struck out eight to pick up the win in game one. Lucy Biekkola and Romey Koskela each had three hits, and Brooke Koskela had two. Lucy Biekkola struck out nine for the game two win and also had two triples. Kaelyn Rouleau had three hits. Sadie Biekkola and Brooke Koskela each had two hits including a home run, and Sofie Freeman also had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Houghton, Lake Linden-Hubbell and Calumet finished one-two-three on both sides of yesterday’s Copper Country Invitational track meet.
- L’Anse finished fourth on the girls side, followed by Hancock, Ontonagon, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, Ewen-Trout Creek, Baraga and Jeffers. Emily Jokela of the Lakes won the 100 and 400-meter dashes, and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Calumet’s Allison Bjorn took the shot put and the discus.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City took fourth on the boys side, followed by Cassell, Ontonagon, Baraga, L’Anse, Hancock and Ewen-Trout Creek. Calumet’s Brayden Krans took the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the long jump, and Matthew Frantti of the Copper Kings won the shot put and the discus throw. Kalvin Kytta from Chassell won the 1600-meter run and the 300-meter hurdles.

MLB
The Tigers smashed the Red Sox 14-2 last night. Detroit took control by scoring nine runs in the third inning. Gleyber Torres and Trey Sweeney each had three hits, including a home run. Jackson Jobe pitched into the sixth, gave up a run on three hits, and struck out seven.
The Tigers host the Red Sox again tonight. Tyler Holton will open against Brayan Bello. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers dropped a 5-0 decision to the Guardians. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, gave up four runs, and took the loss.
The Brewers visit the Guardians again tonight. Quinn Priester will start against Logan Allen.
Brandon Woodruff’s much-anticipated return to the Brewers will be delayed. Woodruff has developed tendonitis in his right ankle. It’s not believed to be serious, but he’ll remain in the minors for at least one more rehab start.
NBA
In NBA conference semifinal play last night…
- The Knicks knocked off the Celtics 121-113. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
- The Timberwolves outscored the Warriors 117-110. Minnesota leads that set 3-1.
Tonight…
- The Pacers visit the Cavaliers. Indiana has a 3-1 lead in that Eastern Conference series.
- The Thunder host the Nuggets. That Western Conference set is tied 2-2.
The Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery last evening, despite having just a 1.8 percent chance of doing so. Dallas will likely take Duke’s Cooper Flagg.
NHL
In NHL conference semifinal play last evening…
- The Hurricanes blew out the Capitals 5-2. Carolina leads that Eastern Conference series 3-1.
- The Oilers smothered the Golden Knights 3-0. Edmonton owns a 3-1 lead in that set.
Tonight…
- The Stars host the Jets. Winnipeg is up 2-1 in that Western Conference series.
GLHL
The Great Lakes Hockey League will be one team lighter next season. At the recent league meeting, officials confirmed that the Dane County Dairy Kings will not return after their inaugural season.
The league will field nine teams, split into three divisions. Teams will play their division rivals four times, and other teams in the league twice, for a total of 20 league contests.
- North Division – Calumet Wolverines, Portage Lake Pioneers, Eagle River Falcons
- Central Division – De Pere Deacons, Mosinee Papermakers, M&M Shamrocks
- South Division – Fond du Lac Bears, Fox Cities Ice Dogs, Sun Prairie Killer Bees
The league also approved new overtime rules. The first extra period will be a five minute four on four. The second will be a five minute three on three. If the score remains tied, the game will be determined by a shootout.
The 2026 GLHL Tournament will feature all nine teams and will be hosted by Portage Lake during the final weekend of March.
