High School
In high school baseball Saturday…
- Houghton won the championship at the Negaunee Invitational Saturday. The Gremlins opened with a 5-3 victory over the host Miners. Jackson VonDoloski got the win on the mound. Hudson Markham drove in two runs. Houghton then blanked Marquette in a four-inning title contest 10-0. Eli Heathman earned the win on the mound, and drove in three runs. Hudson Markham, Brody Donnelly, and Rylan Issacson each added 2 RBI.
- Also at the Negaunee Invitational, Calumet dropped their first game to Marquette 3-1, then lost the consolation contest to the Miners 10-2.
- Jeffers took two from Westwood. The Jets claimed the first contest 4-3, scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jeffers opened the second game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, and cruised to a 9-2 victory. The Jets have won 12 straight games.
At the Escanaba Softball Invitational Saturday…
- Houghton got past Norway 9-6. Estella Soumis struck out nine to get the win, and drove in two runs. Kenzie Collard also had two RBI. The Gremlins fell to Three Rivers 10-0. Houghton collected eight hits, but also committed eight errors.
- Hancock lost to Millington 12-11, and defeated the Escanaba JV 4-1.
- The Gremlins and Bulldogs met in the fifth/sixth place consolation game, with Hancock claiming a 15-8 victory. Sadie and Lucy Biekkola shared the mound and the win for the Bulldogs. Sophie Freeman and Brook Koskela each drove in three Bulldogs runs. Estella Soumis took the loss for the Gremlins.
In girls soccer…
- Houghton and Sault Ste Marie battled to a 2-2 tie. The Gremlins got goals from Sophia Blake in the first half, and Cheyenne Laplander in the second.

MLB
The Tigers’ five-game win streak ended with a 10-3 loss to the Rangers Saturday. Jack Flaherty lasted just three innings, and gave up four of Texas’ five home runs. Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene homered for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Reese Olson will pitch against Nathan Eovaldi. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has added starter Casey Mize to the injured list. He tweaked a hamstring in Thursday’s game. The damage is described as “very mild.” Chase Lee has been called up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers suffered their third straight loss, 3-2 to the Rays. Jackson Chourio and Joey Ortiz homered for Milwaukee. The game featured by the first-ever home rain delays in Tampa Bay history. The Rays are playing at Steinbrenner Field, as repairs continue to the damage caused by Hurricane Milton to the roof at Tropicana Field.
The Brewers play at Tampa Bay again this afternoon. Chad Patrick will start against Drew Rasmussen.
After beginning a rehab assignment with Milwaukee’s rookie-level team in Arizona, pitcher Aaron Ashby has been advanced to the Nashville Sounds. He’s recovering from a right oblique strain.

- The Celtics stopped the Knicks 115-93. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 2-1.
- The Timberwolves got past the Warriors 102-97. Minnesota takes a 2-1 lead in that Western Conference series.

- The Thunder host the Nuggets. Denver leads that set 2-1.
