In hockey last night…
- Lewis Nagel’s first varsity goal gave Calumet a 2-1 victory over Hancock in overtime. Tevin Stukel’s goal in the second period almost held up for the Bulldogs, but Calumet’s Erik Loukus tied the game with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Nagel’s game-winner came 98 seconds into the extra period. Beau Jukuri made 22 saves for the Copper Kings. Adam Mikkola stopped 29 shots for the Bulldogs.

- Houghton pulled away in the fourth quarter to claim a 64-53 victory over Calumet. Isaiah Lawson paced the Gremlins with 19 points, and Lane Laux added 15. Trent Halonen sank six three-pointers, and led the Copper Kings with 18 points.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Watersmeet 54-33.
- Jeffers defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 74-61.

- The Houghton boys fell to the Sentinels 114-69. Beau Haataja won the 200 freestyle, and Collin Raasio took the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
- The Houghton girls lost 113-71. Eveyln LaTendresse won the 200 individual medley.
The swim team will compete at Rudyard tomorrow, along with Sault Ste. Marie.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team raced to a 101-52 victory at Lake Superior State last night. Janie Tormanen scored 18 for the Huskies, who have won three straight.
The Tech men’s team couldn’t recover from a slow start, and fell to the Lakers 82-72. Marcus Tomashek scored 23.
Both Tech teams will play at Ferris State tomorrow.
The Northern Michigan women’s team crushed Ferris State 78-48 last evening. Jacy Wiesbrod led a balanced attack with 14 points.
The NMU men lost to the eighth-ranked Bulldogs 85-79. Dylan Kuehl netted 19 points.
Both NMU squads will play at Lake Superior State tomorrow.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams play a home-and-home series this weekend. Games begin at 7:07 tonight in Houghton, and 6:07 tomorrow in Marquette.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines skate at Fox Cities tonight, and Fond du Lac tomorrow.
Some of the current Portage Lake Pioneers will face some of the team’s alumni in an exhibition tomorrow night. The puck drops at 6 at Dee Stadium. Tickets will be available at the door.
NHL
The Red Wings snapped their three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Canadiens last night. Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist. Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat and Andrew Copp each scored. Cam Talbot made 29 saves.
The Wings host the Lightning tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Magic tomorrow evening.
Detroit star Cade Cunningham did not receive enough fan votes to become a starter in the NBA All-Star game. Reserves will be announced next week.
NFL
In Sunday’s conference championships…
- The Eagles host the Commanders at 3:00.
- The Chiefs entertain the Bills at 6:30.
Both games will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
It’s official – former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will take over as the next head coach of the Jets. It’s a homecoming – Glenn played eight seasons for the Jets. Detroit will receive two compensatory draft picks because of the hire – a third-rounder this year, and another next year. There’s an NFL policy that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and administrators who advance to higher jobs with other organizations.
