Despite widespread national economic uncertainty, Visit Keweenaw reports that tourism to the region has not appreciably slowed. With fewer individuals and families travelling due to economic pressures, visitors to Houghton and Keweenaw Counties have shown a resiliency to the expected dip in popularity that results from a recession.
Visit Keweenaw, the tourism board responsible for promoting the Peninsula and its attractions, has released the official summer 2026 tourism statistics. According to data from AirDNA and CoStar, the region only saw a 3.22% dip as compared to the 2025 season; total lodging revenue saw a total dip of 3% overall.
The tourism council stated that due to the Keweenaw being situated at the northernmost point of the state, some visitors may be reluctant to drive there when fuel prices rise to above previous levels. In addition, the occasional presence of smoke from the recent Canadian wildfires also tends to drive tourism elsewhere.
Even with these and other factors coming into play, Visit Keweenaw says “Despite these hurdles, the region maintained steady travel activity, bolstered by strong community events, outdoor recreation, and loyal return visitors.”
Being as a large component of the Keweenaw Economy is driven by the multi-seasonal tourism industry, the overall steadfastness of visitors to the region allows the local economy to fare better than some other tourism-reliant areas. The consistency of visitor numbers is said to be indicative of the strong impression the Peninsula leaves on its returning fans. Numbers produced by this most recent study are only reflective of people who stay overnight in commercial lodging and not campers or day visitors.
As the summer season ends and cold season arrives, Visit Keweenaw encourages those interested in visiting the area to try out fall color tours, winter trails and more.
