High School
In high school volleyball last night…
- Hancock swept Chassell 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13). For Chassell, Elli Kuntze had 11 kills, 1 block and 5 aces. Hilde Kuntze had 2 kills and 3 aces, Sylvia Aho had 16 assists and 3 aces.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell dispatched Ontonagon 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-19).
- Forest Park wiped out Stephenson 3-0 (25-6. 25-7, 25-11).
In cross country yesterday…
- Houghton swept the team honors at the Tracy Strom Invitational at Ishpeming.
- On the boys side, Jeffers finished second. The Gremlins claimed three of the top five spots individually, led by medalist Brandon Van Karsen.
- On the girls side, Negaunee placed second, and Calumet third. Julia Plaxco of the Miners medaled. Gremlins claimed the next three spots, with Holly Cooke second.

- At the Baraga Invitational at L’Anse Golf Course…
- Only two boys teams brought enough runners to qualify in the team competition. The Copper Island Academy outpointed Ironwood. There were only 22 runners overall. Niko Reed of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City medaled.
- The girls’ side also had only two qualifying teams. L’Anse outscored Ewen-Trout Creek. Bree Besonen of Ewen-Trout Creek was the fastest of 26 runners.

The Houghton boys soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against Marquette yesterday.

- Calumet entertains Kingsford for homecoming – 6:40 pregame on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The homecoming parade will line up at 5:30 on Mine Street. It will step off at 6:00, and proceed through town to Agassiz Field.
- Hancock travels to Negaunee – 6:40 pregame on the Voice of the Bulldogs, Lite 96.3 Houghton’s Breeze.
- L’Anse welcomes Gwinn.
- Ontonagon plays at Norway.
- West Iron County’s game against Bark River-Harris has been called off because the Wykons have folded their team.
- Forest Park welcomes North Dickinson – on the Voice of Iron County Sports, 99.1 WIKB.
Tomorrow…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Central for homecoming – 1:10 pregame on the Voice of the Lakes, KBear 102.3. The homecoming parade will begin this evening at 6:30, and end at the park for the traditional bonfire.

College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon at 1:00, and at Ferris State Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team plays at Wayne State this afternoon, and Saginaw Valley State Sunday.
The Northern men’s squad plays at Roosevelt University this afternoon, and Saint Cloud State on Saturday.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Wayne State tonight.
The Northern Michigan volleyball team visits Grand Valley State tomorrow afternoon.
College Football
Both the Michigan Tech and Northern football teams have this weekend off.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Pirates for their final series of the season beginning tonight. Jackson Jobe will start against Bubba Chandler. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The play-by-play voices of the Tigers will remain in place for a while. The team has agreed to contract extensions for television anchor Jason Benetti and radio anchor Dan Dickerson. Lengths of the extensions and other terms were not revealed.
The Brewers stifled the Phillies 5-1 last night. Milwaukee broke the game open with three runs in the eighth inning. The victory marked the first 100-win season in team history, and clinched the top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
The Brewers host the Cardinals for their final series of the regular season beginning tonight. Robert Gasser will pitch against Michael McGreevy.
NFL
The Packers lost to the Falcons 34-14 in last night’s NFL game. Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes, but the Green Bay rushing attack was held to just 17 yards. Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson ran for 194 yards on 29 carries.
The Lions host the Jets in a 1:00 game on Sunday.
NHL
The Red Wings got past the Sabers 3-2 in overtime last night. Alex deBrincat’s slap shot 33 seconds into the extra period was the game-winner. Daniel Tarasov played the entire game in net, and made 17 saves.
The Wings have today off, and host the Blue Jackets in a preseason contest tomorrow night.
