A major challenge facing communities nationwide involves how to effectively engage residents in local governance. Council meetings with limited agendas often go unnoticed until controversial developments, procedures, or zoning changes emerge.
Early engagement with municipal processes can foster better understanding between local governments and residents, leading to more informed decision-making on developments, programs, projects, and initiatives.
Next week, Michigan Technological University will host Dr. Lindsey Cormack from Stevens Institute of Technology for a presentation on civic participation and democratic responsibility. Cormack, a contributor to The New York Times, Washington Post, and CBS News, will break down what constitutional democracy demands of its citizens.
“Active Responsibility of Citizenship” is part of the visiting professor program at Michigan Tech and is funded through a grant provided to the Office of the Provost.
