High School
In high school football last night…
- Houghton fell at Kingsford 34-6. The Flivvers led 14-0 at halftime. The Gremlins narrowed the gap with a touchdown on their first drive of the second half, but Kingsford responded immediately and pulled away for the win.
- Calumet downed Westwood 27-8. The Copper Kings scored on a 31-yard Keith Koivisto run on their opening drive, then added a touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half when Oskar Loukus connected with Owen Peterson on a nine-yard scoring pass. The Kings increased their lead with a five-play, 66-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter, all on the legs of Loukus, who turned in a 45-yard run that led to an eight-yard touchdown dash. Trent Anderson’s 18-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter closed out Calumet’s scoring. The Patriots got on the board when Ellis King raced 62 yards for a score on the first play following the kickoff. Loukus also contributed two interceptions in the victory.
- Hancock routed West Iron County 58-0.
- L’Anse outscored Manistique 36-22.

In volleyball last evening…
- Houghton got past Jeffers 3-2 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 10-15). For the Gremlins, Lydia Williams:18 kills, 2 aces, 20 digs and 4 blocks. Katia Rudak had 31 digs, and Alyssa Northey recorded 35 assists, 2 aces and 34 digs.
- Calumet blanked West Iron County 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-10).
- Ewen-Trout Creek outlasted Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-2 (28-26, 8-25, 19-25, 28-26, 15-13). For the Blue Bolts, Lillian Pelland-Rippey racked up 20 kills, followed by Hannah Karanen with 16. Ava Nye totaled 14 service points including 2 aces. Kiya Kemppainen had 44 digs, and Ellie Keranen added 34. Sylvie Kentala totaled 57 assists for the match.
At the Bill Fezzey Invitational cross country meet at Houghton yesterday…
- Houghton edged out Jeffers to take the boys team title. Brandon Van Karsen of the Gremlins medaled.
- The Gremlins girls claimed four of the top five spots, and easily outscored runner-up L’Anse. Maria Murvich of Kingsford medaled, with Houghton’s Holly Cooke in second place.

College Volleyball
At the Mountain Lion Classic at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs yesterday, the Michigan Tech volleyball team fell to the host squad 3-2 (25-27, 13-25, 25-23, 25-21, 10-15). Rachel Zurek had 17 kills. Madelynn Kreider tallied 37 assists and 17 digs. The Huskies will take on Saint Edward’s this morning at 11:00, South Dakota Mines this evening at 6:30, and Midwestern State tomorrow at 1:30.
At the Cal State East Bay tournament in Hayward, California, Northern Michigan got past the host team 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 17-15). The Wildcats will face Colorado School of Mines this afternoon at 1:00, Westmont College this evening at 8:30, and San Francisco State tomorrow at 4:00.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team fell to Northwood 3-1 yesterday in a game played at Cedarville University in Ohio. MacKenzie Dollison netted the Huskies’ only goal. Tech will take on Cedarville tomorrow.
The Northern Michigan women’s team played Cedarville to a scoreless draw last night. The Wildcats will play Northwood at Cedarville tomorrow.
The Northern Michigan men’s team shaded Lake Erie College 3-2 yesterday. The Wildcats will play at Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team will host Midwestern State tomorrow at noon.
The Northern Michigan squad will entertain Tiffin tomorrow night at 6:00.
MLB
The Tigers scored five runs in the top of the 12th inning, and broke out of their funk with an 11-6 victory over the Twins last night. Spencer Torkelson’s two-run homer gave Detroit the lead, and Javier Báez’ bases-loaded bloop double off the glove of first baseman Royce Lewis sealed the win. That came after each team had scored once in the 11th. John Peck got his first two major league hits – an RBI double in the second inning, and an RBI single in the sixth. Max Clark had three hits and scored three runs.
The Tigers head to Cleveland for two games against the Guardians today. The afternoon contest makes up a rainout from June 14th. Keider Montero will start against Logan Allen. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift. Andrew Sears will start the regularly-scheduled evening game against Foster Griffin. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have reportedly agreed to pay a $4 million signing bonus to Dominican player Kevin Sosa, who is 12 years old. International players can’t be officially signed until they are 16, but clubs often reach informal agreements in advance of that. This is the biggest so far. There are no signatures, though, so either side can walk away without penalty.
The Brewers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cubs last evening. Pete Crow-Armstrong’s two-run homer in the third inning off Logan Henderson was one of only three Chicago hits in the contest. Andrew Vaughn homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers visit the Reds tonight. Shane Drohan will pitch against Rhett Lowder.
