A medical emergency likely caused a fatal accident in Calumet on Sunday afternoon.
Michigan State Police troopers responded to a vehicle crash at School Street and Hecla Street before 4 p.m. A preliminary investigation found that a 50-year-old Calumet man was traveling east on School Street when he experienced a medical emergency.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck a garage attached to a home on the north side of School Street. The driver attempted to reverse the vehicle, which then traveled across School Street and struck a second attached garage on the south side of the road.
A trooper and first responders removed the driver from the vehicle and attempted CPR. The man was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw, where he was pronounced dead.
Michigan State Police believe the individual died as a result of the medical emergency and not from injuries sustained in the crash. No other injuries were reported.
