Hancock’s tenure as the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture concludes soon, but cultural programming continues through the year’s final days.
The Finlandia Art Gallery at the Finnish American Heritage Center opens a new photo exhibit Thursday evening featuring the northernmost ethnic group of the Finno-Ugric diaspora. “Walking with Reindeer” by photographer Erika Larsen showcases images captured between 2007 and 2011 while she lived with Sami reindeer herders in Norway and Sweden.
A second collection, “Sami Herders in Alaska,” documents 137 Sami herders and their families hired by the United States Reindeer Project between 1894 and 1898. The exhibit also features artifacts including wooden cups and a traditional Sami hanging cradle.
Marlene Wisuri from Saami Circle North will open the exhibit during the reception, offering remarks on the organization’s awareness work.
The opening reception begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Finnish American Heritage Center on Quincy Street in Hancock. Find more details here. The exhibit will remain on display between August 27th and September 23rd.
