Tarik Skubal dominated again, as the Tigers shaded the Royals 2-1 last evening. The Tigers’ ace pitched into the eighth, allowed a run on four hits, and struck out a dozen. Both of Detroit’s runs came in the first inning, on a sacrifice fly by Riley Greene and an RBI single by Hao-Yu Lee.
The Tigers continue that home set against the Royals this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
After a couple of rehab games with Detroit’s Single-A Lakeland farm club, Javier Báez is expected to move up to Triple-A Toledo today. He’s recovering from a sprained ankle. Reliever Burch Smith’s return from the injury list was derailed after he had to leave a rehab appearance with the Mud Hens Thursday night with a shoulder problem. He’s being evaluated.
The Brewers dropped a 5-2 decision to the Rockies last night. Shane Drohan struggled through six innings, allowing all five Colorado runs. Christian Yelich and Brice Turang homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers host the Rockies again tonight. Robert Gasser will pitch against Ryan Feltner.
David Hamilton is back with the Brewers, after time on the injured list. Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment to open a roster spot.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall. Two-time defending NCAA Division II champion Ferris State was tabbed to win the conference again. The Bulldogs have won five of the last seven conference crowns. Grand Valley State was picked for second place. Northern Michigan was voted into sixth place.
