Verna Mize’s name is synonymous with Lake Superior. In the 1970s, she led an effort to hold taconite companies accountable for the tailings left in the lake. The impact of that movement forced companies to clean up sites in the western end of Lake Superior. Since 2021, Mize’s home of Houghton has honored her legacy with a triathlon.
Race Director Mary Kaminski says the race’s tagline “in and along the water she saved” reminds participants how precious the lake is to industry, community, and heritage.
“Some of the racers will actually be sending me information that they’ve learned about it. It’s just precious. This is as much, if not more, about the message of what Verna Mize did to save Lake Superior as it is to enjoy a competitive race or physical activity. People really understand the value of Lake Superior and how important it is for us to keep that in mind moving forward,” said Mary Kaminski, organizer, Verna Mize Triathlon.
The Verna Mize Triathlon has grown since the first race in 2021. From 30 racers in the first year to more than 50 who participated in the fifth annual triathlon, the sixth annual Verna Mize Triathlon in Houghton will run, swim and bike on August 1st.
