Isle Royale National Park is feeling the impact of wildfires in Ontario and northern Minnesota. Throughout the week, National Park Service staff have worked to maintain the safety of the park for visitors.
Smoke conditions affecting air quality have forced several seaplanes to cancel trips to the park. However, the park has recently reopened Merritt Lane campground after the threat from the Red Rocks fire decreased significantly.
Isle Royale National Park noted no campers were located at Merritt Lane campground during the fire threat, and no evacuation was needed. The Red Rocks fire consumed only 0.1 acres.
Park rangers and staff have spread information across the park through various means, including talking with visitors as they arrive and posting signage near closures. Off-trail camping zones remain closed at this time.
Park rangers continue to monitor conditions. National parks close for wildfire conditions but do not close for smoke conditions alone.
