The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department confirmed one case of cyclosporiasis in Houghton County on Wednesday. The individual contracted the parasite while traveling in Mexico two weeks ago.
The case is unrelated to a recent outbreak in southeast Michigan that has grown rapidly from 170 cases recorded at the end of June.
Health department officials do not believe there is any danger presented to the public at this time.
Department officials encourage people to wash and cook fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Those interested in learning more about food safety can find details online.
