High School
The regular high school sports season wrapped up yesterday…
In baseball…
- Houghton dropped two to Marquette, 2-0 and 14-3. The Gremlins were held to just two hits in the opener and five in the nightcap.
- Calumet downed Jeffers 6-2.
- Hancock fell to Negaunee 6-5 and 6-0. Chase Keranen had three hits for the Bulldogs in the opener. Hancock was held to just two hits in the nightcap.
- L’Anse v Ontonagon – no report.
In softball…
- Calumet lost to Negaunee 13-0 and 17-14. The Copper Kings managed just one hit in the opener. The Miners collected only four, but took advantage of 11 walks. Calumet built an early six-run lead in the nightcap, powered by a solo home run by Chloe Coppo and a grand slam by Bethany Garrow. The Miners came back, and sealed the win with five runs in the top of the seventh.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell stuffed Westwood 17-0 and 18-2. Payton Goldsworthy hit two home runs and drove in four in the opener, and struck out 10 to earn the win in the circle. She added another homer and four RBI in the nightcap. Sofia Hamton had three hits and drove in five runs. Ashlyn Steves got the win. The Lakes finish the regular season with a record of 27-2.
- Jeffers routed the Copper Island Academy 17-2 and 21-6. Meg Ruohonen homered, tripled and drove in five runs for the Jets in the first game. Evelyn Sturos tripled and drove in three runs in the second contest. The first game ended after three innings, and the second after four innings because of the mercy rule.
- L’Anse v Ontonagon – no report.
- Forest Park lost to Carney-Nadeau 4-3 and 19-0.
- Gogebic blanked Ironwood 14-0 in a Division Four, District 97 tournament play-in game. The Miners will face Lake Linden-Hubbell in a district semifinal game Friday.
At the Dan Juntilla track meet at Calumet yesterday…
- Houghton took an easy team win on the boys side. L’Anse was a distant second, followed by Calumet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Baraga, the Copper Island Academy, Hancock, Ewen-Trout Creek, Chassell and Jeffers. Michael Solena of the Gremlins won the shot put and the discus throw, and Houghton swept the relays. Connor Kemppainen of the Purple Hornets won both hurdles events. Baron Colbert from the Blue Bolts win the 200-meter sprint and the high jump.
- Calumet claimed the girls team win, with Houghton a close second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed third, followed by Ewen-Trout Creek, Baraga, L’Anse, Ontonagon, Chassell and Jeffers. Alexa Hoffman of the Copper Kings took the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Alena Pietila won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Chassell’s Jordan Holombo won both hurdles events.

Copper Mountain Conference cross country awards have been revealed…
- Talon Hughes from Ironwood and Violet Amos from Ontonagon were named Most Valuable Players.
- Connor Kemppainen from L’Anse and Jordan Holombo from Chassell were honored as top hurdlers.
- Top sprinter awards went to Jayden Verrett from Bessemer and Addeline Schmitt from Lake Linden-Hubbell.
- Bree Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek and Lukas Axford from Lake Linden-Hubbell were the top distance runners.
- Taven Lewis from L’Anse was the top boys thrower. Girls honors were split between Maddy Dudenas from Lake Linden-Hubbell and Elisa Delene from Baraga.
- Top jumper honors went to Henry Jenkins from Bessemer and Baron Colbert from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, and Laila Bell and Kiera Isaacson from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

The U.P. Golf Championships will be staged today…
- D1 boys play at Sweetgrass.

NBA
The Thunder outscored the Spurs 127-114 last night. Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference final 3-2. Game six will be played tomorrow.
NHL
The Golden Knights advanced with a 2-1 win over the Avalanche. Vegas sweeps the Western Conference final 4-0.
The Canadiens host the Hurricanes tonight. Carolina leads the Eastern Conference final 2-1.
MLB
The Tigers couldn’t hold a three-run lead, and fell 10-6 to the Angels last night. Will Vest served up a grand slam to Vaughn Grissom as L.A. scored five runs in the top of the eighth. Wenceel Pérez homered for Detroit, and Kevin McGonigle had a two-run triple.
The Tigers have lost 17 of their last 20, and host the Angels again tonight. Casey Mize will start against José Soriano. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
There is concerning news about Javier Báez. His ankle sprain isn’t healing as quickly as was expected. He’ll see a specialist for further evaluation.
The Brewers blanked the Cardinals 6-0. Kyle Harrison turned in another gem, holding St. Louis to four hits over six innings. Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell homered.
The Brewers entertain the Cardinals again this afternoon. Milwaukee has not named a starter. Dustin May will pitch for the Redbirds.
Milwaukee has added starter Logan Henderson to the injured list with a low back strain. Coleman Crow has been brought back up from Nashville.
