The newest Copper Shores Meals on Wheels Meet and Eat site will debut today.
The recent passage of the Elder Nutrition Millage is supporting a push into the southern portion of Houghton County, which has not been served until now.
Today’s new site is the Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Hall, which will serve seniors in the Toivola area. Emilie Jacques from Copper Shores tells us 26 people have signed up for the first lunch. Advance registration for meal site lunches is required by calling the Meals on Wheels office at 483-1155 at least one day in advance. The Meet and Eat meals are free for anyone 60 years or older.
Two additional meal sites are expected to open by the end of the month. One will serve the Alston area from the Laird Township Hall. The other will serve the southernmost part of the county, with meals served at the Sidnaw Community Hall during winter, and the Duncan Township Hall in Kenton during the summer.
They join the existing meal sites in Mohawk, Hancock, Lake Linden and Chassell.
Copper Shores officials also say that the Elder Nutrition Millage has enabled them to eliminate the waiting list of seniors who need meals delivered. The organization now provides meals and welfare checks to 360 seniors – 60 more than this time last year.
