High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Houghton fell to Westwood 5-3 and 11-3. The Gremlins outhit the Patriots 9-4 in the opener, but had trouble bringing the runners around. Brycyn Nettel, Gunner Flachs and Max Bier each had two hits. Houghton also outhit Westood in the nightcap, 11-10, but, again, had trouble scoring. Nettel had two hits, and drove in a run.
In softball…
- Calumet used two big innings to rout Houghton 19-8. The Copper Kings scored seven runs in the third inning, with RBI doubles by Clara Issacson and Bethany Garrow, and singles by Chloe Coppo and Jailyn Poshak. They piled on eight more in the sixth, with an RBI double by Coppo, and singles by Molly Erkkila, Jaysa Wilks and Poshak. Houghton narrowed the gap a bit in the bottom of the sixth, with an RBI single by Aanika Schlief, a double by Kia Markham, and a home run by Romi Mattson.
At the Baraga Early Bird track and field meet yesterday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell claimed the boys title, followed by Calumet, L’Anse, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Baraga, Ewen-Trout Creek, Hancock, Chassell, the Copper Island Academy and Watersmeet. Josh Daavettila of the Lakes won the high jump and the long jump, and the Lakes claimed three of the four relays. L’Anse’s Connor Kemppainen took the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Taven Lewis of the Purple Hornets won the shot put and the discus throw.
- Ewen-Trout Creek took the girls crown. Calumet placed second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, L’Anse, Chassell, Baraga, Jeffers and Watersmeet. Bree Besonen of the Panthers won the 1600 and 32oo-meter runs.

In the NBA tournament last night…
- The Pistons are in a hole, after a 94-88 loss to the Magic. Cade Cunningham scored 25 points and Tobias Harris added 20, but no one else scored more than 12. The Magic lead the series 3-1, with Detroit facing elimination in game five at home tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
- The Thunder dispatched the Suns 131-122. Oklahoma sweeps that series 4-0.
- The Nuggets outscored the Timberwolves 125-113. Minnesota holds a 3-2 series lead.
Tonight…
- The 76ers visit the Celtics. Boston leads that series 3-1.
- The Knicks entertain the Hawks. That set is tied 2-2.
- The Spurs host the Trail Blazers. San Antonio has a 3-1 series lead.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
- The Penguins shaded the Flyers 3-2. Philadelphia leads that series 3-2.
- The Golden Knights edged the Mammoth 5-4 in overtime. That set is tied 2-2.
Tonight…
- The Sabres host the Bruins. Buffalo leads that series 3-1.
- The Stars entertain the Wild. That series is tied 2-2.
- The Oilers host the Ducks. Anaheim has a 3-1 lead in that set.
MLB
The Tigers had last night off, and begin a series at Atlanta this evening. Casey Mize will start against Martín Pérez. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and welcome the Diamondbacks tonight. Chad Patrick will pitch for Milwaukee.
