High School
In high school hockey last night…
- Calumet couldn’t hold a late lead, and settled for a 2-2 tie with Escanaba. Robert Loukus scored in the first period, and Erik Loukus added a power play tally early in the third. Nolan Bink got one back for the Eskymoes midway through the third, and Graham Johnson tied the game with two minutes remaining in regulation, leading to a scoreless overtime. Shots on goal were also nearly even, favoring Calumet 32-29. The Copper Kings conclude their regular season with a record of 17-8-2, in third place in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference.
- Hancock dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Marquette. Goals by Trey Savola and Jameson Sandstrom gave the Sentinels an early lead. Drew Sturos narrowed the gap early in the second frame, but Colton Hartz reestablished Marquette’s two-goal advantage by the end of the period. Third-period tallies by Ted Heinonen and Connor Helminen forced overtime. Carter Beeling netted the game-winner. The Bulldogs outshot the Sentinels 31-21.
- Blake Heltunen’s goal early in the third period gave Jeffers a 4-3 victory over Northland Pines. Ryan Turpeinen, Brogan Turner and Max Nordstrom also scored for the Jets, with Heltunen assisting on each goal. Kasen Helminen got the win in net, as Jeffers outshot the Eagles 37-17. The Jets finish the regular season as champions of the Great Lakes Hockey Conference, with a record of 17-6-1.

- Hancock hosts Marquette at 1:00 to conclude their regular campaign. The 2016 and 1999 state championship teams will be honored at the game.
- Houghton ends its regular season at Green Bay Notre Dame. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
In boys basketball last night…
- Houghton outscored Escanaba 52-41.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell shaded Chassell 49-47. Blake Lebo led the Lakes with 28 points, and Josh Daavettila added 12. Brayden Larson scored 25 for the Panthers, and Dayne Tarvis netted 10.
- Baraga got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 60-49.
- L’Anse stopped West Iron County 56-42.
- Forest Park dumped Munising 85-51.
On the girls schedule…
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Stephenson – no report.
- Forest Park slipped past Norway 57-55 in overtime.

College Hockey
The 17th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team couldn’t hold an early lead, and wound up with a 2-2 tie at Lake Superior State last night. Jack Anderson scored both Tech goals midway through the second period. The Lakers got one back early in the second period, then forced extra time by scoring with 29 seconds left in the third, and an extra attacker on the ice. After two scoreless overtimes, the Lakers won the bonus CCHA standings point in a shootout. The Huskies skate at the Soo again tonight.
The Northern Michigan hockey team also faltered late, and settled for a 4-4 tie at Ferris State last evening. The Wildcats took a 4-2 lead with a goal by Girts Silkans early in the third period, but the Bulldogs narrowed the gap late in the period, and, with an extra attacker on the ice, tied the contest with 95 seconds remaining in regulation. After two scoreless overtimes, Ferris claimed the bonus CCHA standings point in the shootout.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Wayne State today.
Both Northern Michigan squads play at Purdue Northwest today.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers opened a busy weekend with a 4-2 loss at Eagle River last night. It was the first loss for the Pios since December of 2024, and ended a 37-game winning streak. The Pioneers will host a rematch against the Falcons tonight at 7:30, and entertain the De Pere Deacons tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
The Calumet Wolverines will host the Deacons tonight at 7:30. That game will feature Put the Puck to Cancer events and gear sales to raise money for Keweenaw Random Acts of Community Kindness.
NHL
The Red Wings are off until February 26th because of the Olympic break.
NBA
The Pistons and Bucks are off until late next week because of the All Star break.
MLB
The Brewers have reportedly reached a deal with free agent infielder Luis Rengifo. It’s a one-year, major league contract worth $3.5 million plus incentives, and a team option for 2027. He’s a switch-hitter who spent seven seasons with the Angels. Some were productive, but he struggled last year, both offensively and defensively.
