High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton skated past Jeffers 4-1. Porter Markham gave the Gremlins a first-period lead, Gage Gullstrand and Max Aldrich added second-period goals. Brody Donnelly finished the Houghton scoring in the third period, and Cam Anderson’s late goal for the Jets spoiled the shutout. Houghton outshot Jeffers 37-24.
In high school football tournament action involving Upper Peninsula teams…
- In Eight-Player Division Two, North Dickinson advanced to the state championship game by routing Onekama 44-28 Saturday. The Nordics will face Portland St. Patrick Saturday at 2:00 at the Superior Dome.
- In Eight-Player Division One, Norway’s season ended with a 32-28 loss to Montabella. The Mustangs will play Martin for the state title Saturday at 11:00 at the Superior Dome.
- In 11-Player Division Eight, Bark River-Harris stunned Glen Lake 22-21 Friday. The Broncos will face Harbor Beach in a semifinal game Saturday at 1:00 at Alpena. Hudson and Allen Park Cabrini will play in the other semifinal.
- In 11-Player Division Seven, Menominee whitewashed Shelby 43-0 Saturday. The Maroons will meet Pewamo-Westphalia in a semifinal game Saturday at Gaylord High School. Schoolcraft and Clinton will play in the other semifinal.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team shaded Bemidji State 2-1 in overtime Saturday. Stiven Sardarian scored in regulation for the Huskies, and Max Koskipirtti netted the game-winner 95 seconds into the extra stanza. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 26 saves.
The Northern hockey team had this weekend off.
College Football
Mason McKenzie’s six-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining in the game lifted Saginaw Valley State to a 24-21 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday. The Huskies played from behind all afternoon, but claimed their first lead when Alex Bueno hit Ethan Champney with a 39-yard touchdown pass with just over six minutes remaining. Elliott Larner and Nic Nora each ran for touchdowns. Tech finishes its season with a record of 7-4.
Noah Dobert rushed for 406 yards – that is not a typo, 406 yards – as the NMU football squad ended its campaign with a 45-11 rout of Wayne State. Dobert broke loose for touchdown runs of 56, 52, 64 and 72 yards. He blew away the previous NMU single-game record by 89 yards, and now holds one of the top-five rushing performances in NCAA Division II history. He also set Wildcats’ single-season marks with 1,656 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Northern concludes its campaign with a record of 3-8, including wins in their last two games under interim head coach Billy Lindquist.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Lake Superior State Saturday. Rachel Zurek had 13 kills, Madelynn Kreider had 37 assists, and Julia Fledderjohn notched 21 digs. The Huskies finish with a record of 12-15 overall, and 9-7 in the GLIAC. Tech is seeded seventh in the GLIAC tournament, and will open play Tuesday at Wayne State.
The NMU volleyball team got past Saginaw Valley State 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 32-30) Saturday. McKenzie Gruner had 19 kills for the Wildcats, who conclude the regular season with a record of 15-13 overall, and 12-4 in the GLIAC. NMU is seeded third in the GLIAC tourney, and will host parkside Tuesday.
College Soccer
The NMU men’s soccer team will play in its first-ever GLIAC tournament final today. The third-seeded Wildcats will face top-seeded Saginaw Valley State at 1:00 at University Center.
College Basketball
At the NCAA D-II Midwest Region Tip-Off at Wisconsin Dells Saturday…
- The 13th-ranked Tech men’s team bounced back from Friday’s loss to take a 72-61 victory over Maryville yesterday. Gabe Smith led a balanced Huskies attack with 16 points.
- The Tech women’s team smothered Upper Iowa 70-30. Janie Tormanen scored 16, as the Huskies gave up the fewest points to an opponent since defeating Finlandia University 62-26 in 2011.
- The NMU men’s team couldn’t overcome a cold start, and fell 80-67 to Missouri-Saint Louis. The Wildcats scored just 28 points in the opening half. Dylan Kuehl netted 19 points.
- The NMU women’s team cruised past Lewis 66-54. The Wildcats’ defense held the Flyers to just six points in the second quarter, and 11 in the third. Sarah Newcomer led NMU with 16 points.
NHL
The Red Wings couldn’t hold a three-goal lead, and fell to the Sabres 5-4 in overtime Saturday evening. Alex DeBrincat scored twice for Detroit, and Patrick Kane and Dylan Larkin netted one each. Mattias Samuelsson scored the game-winner 65 seconds into the extra period off John Gibson, who stopped 22 of 27 shots he faced.
The Wings visit the Rangers tonight.
NBA
The Pistons host the Pacers tomorrow.
The Bucks fell to the Lakers 119-95 Saturday. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bucks visit the Cavaliers tomorrow.
NFL
The Packers visit the Giants for a 1:00 game today.
