High School
On the opening night of the high school hockey season…
- Houghton and Hancock skated to a 2-2 tie. The Gremlins opened an early lead with goals by Gage Gullstrand and Braden Kari. The Bulldogs responded with tallies by Drew Sturos and Ben Keranen.
- Brogan Turner scored four goals as Jeffers shellacked Cheboygan 9-1.

- In Eight-Player Division Two, North Dickinson faces Onekama in a semifinal at Marquette today at 1:00.
- In Eight-Player Division One, Norway takes on Montabella today at Thirlby Field in Traverse City.
- In 11-Player Division Eight, Bark River-Harris stunned Glen Lake 22-21. The Lakers appeared to have won the game when they scored a touchdown and an extra point with eight seconds remaining. But, on the ensuing kickoff, the Bark River receiver tossed a lateral pass to Gionni McDonough, who raced nearly 100 yards for a touchdown, then ran in the two-point conversion to pull out the win with no time left on the clock. The Broncos advance to the state semifinals, and will play the winner of today’s game between Beal City and Harbor Beach.
- In 11-Player Division Seven, Menominee entertains Shelby today at noon.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team fought Bemidji State to a 2-2 tie last night, then lost the bonus CCHA standings point in a shootout. Elias Jansson and Max Koskipirtti scored for the Huskies. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 33 saves.
The Huskies host the Beavers again tonight at 6:07.
The Northern hockey team has this weekend off.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team concludes its season with a home game against Saginaw Valley State today at noon.
The NMU football squad ends its campaign with a home match against Wayne State.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team earned a tough 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24) victory over Saginaw Valley State yesterday. Rachel Zurek paced the Huskies with 14 kills, and Paige Wagner and Maddie Torola each added 13. Maddy Kreider recorded 44 assists.
Tech wraps up its regular season at home against Lake Superior State today at 2:00.
The NMU volleyball team swept LSSU 3-0 last night, and hosts Saginaw Valley today.
College Soccer
Both GLIAC soccer tournaments wrap up this weekend.
- The NMU men’s team has reached the championship game for the first time in school history. The third-seeded Wildcats upended second-seeded Roosevelt 2-1 in overtime in yesterday’s semifinal. Ian Weimer scored both Wildcats goals. Northern will play top-seeded Saginaw Valley State for the tournament title tomorrow at 1:00 at University Center.
- The NMU women’s team ended its season with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Grand Valley State in a semifinal game yesterday.
College Basketball
The MTU and NMU men’s and women’s basketball teams are competing at the NCAA D-II Midwest Region Tip-Off at Wisconsin Dells this weekend.
- The 13th-ranked Tech men’s team couldn’t overcome a cold start, and fell to Missouri-Saint Louis 78-57 yesterday afternoon. The Huskies scored just 23 points in the first half. Tech will face Maryville this afternoon.
- The Tech women’s team got off to a fast start, and sprinted past Lewis 68-55 last night. Soraya Timms led a balanced attack with 17 points. The Huskies will play Upper Iowa tonight.
- The NMU men’s team outscored Maryville 91-70 yesterday afternoon. Charlie Miller and Dylan Kuehl each netted 16 points. Northern will face Missouri-Saint Louis this afternoon.
- The NMU women’s team crushed Upper Iowa 95-40 last evening. Jacy Weisbrod scored 22. The Wildcats will take on Lewis this evening.
NHL
The Red Wings entertain the Sabres this evening. Because of college football, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The short-handed Pistons dumped the 76ers 114-105 in an NBA Cup game last night. With Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren still on the bench with injuries, Javonte Green led Detroit with 21 points, and Daniss Jenkins added 19. The Pistons have won nine straight, and host the Pacers Monday.
The Bucks outscored the Hornets 147-134 in an NBA Cup game last evening. Kyle Kuzma scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 25 points and 18 assists. The Bucks welcome the Lakers tonight.
NFL
The Packers visit the Giants for a 1:00 game tomorrow.
The Lions call on the Eagles for the Sunday night game, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift. Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta and cornerback Terrion Arnold will miss the game with injuries.
