L’Anse area schools celebrate many veterans who once roamed the schools’ halls. For today’s veterans’ day ceremony, the district asked 2011 graduate of L’Anse high school, Jacob Schwartz to deliver the keynote address. Schwartz says it’s an honor to return to his former school district and share with students the sacrifice many residents, family members and alumni have made.
It was a wonderful experience. Many of them I’ve known or at least I’ve seen as I was growing up. And so it is an immense honor to just stand with them and be a presence and to show the kids in this high school and the young kids that uh being in the military isn’t something that’s foreign and scary. These are people that are from here. It’s their family. It’s for them. It’s for their community. – Jacob Schwartz, Staff Sergeant, Michigan Army National Guard
Baraga county is home to more than 700 united states military veterans. After graduating from L’Anse high school, Schwartz joined the united state army national guard while in college. He now works with the Michigan Technological University Army ROTC department as a military recruiter, after he completed service assisting customs and border patrol in Texas. Those interested in learning more about veterans’ issues in Baraga County should contact the Baraga county veterans service office director Douglas Gray.
