High School
High school volleyball regional semifinals last night…
- In Division Four, Hancock’s season ended with a very tight 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-21) loss to Forest Park. The Bulldogs end their season with a record of 26-5-2. The Trojans improve to 40-1, and will face Ishpeming for the regional title tomorrow at 7:00 at L’Anse High School. The Hematites advanced with an easy 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) victory over Norway.
- In Division Three, Jeffers’ playoff run continued with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Manistique. Mia Nordstrom led the Jets with 16 kills. Elizabeth Halonen had 15 assists. Jeffers will face Traverse City St. Francis for the regional title tomorrow at 6:00 at Newberry. St. Francis eliminated Johannesburg-Lewiston 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-18).
In other volleyball tournament action last night involving Upper Peninsula teams…
- In Division Four, Newberry ousted St. Ignace 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19). The Indians will take on Atlanta, which eliminated Gaylord St. Mary 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-19).
- In Division Two, Kingsford’s season concluded with a 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 15-7) loss to Ogemaw Heights.
College Soccer
The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 2-0 victory over Ferris State yesterday. Hannah Kastamo and Kenna Alexander scored for the Wildcats, and Jillian Thompson made four saves as Northern recorded its third straight shutout.
The fifth-seeded Wildcats will face top-seeded Grand Valley State in Friday’s first semifinal match in Allendale. The Lakers dispatched Roosevelt 8-0 yesterday. Second-seeded Parkside will play third-seeded Saginaw Valley State in the other semifinal.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Ducks tomorrow. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Pistons host the Bulls tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks visit the Hornets this evening.
MLB
Milwaukee’s Pat Murphy has been named National League Manager of the Year for the second consecutive season. Cleveland’s Stephen Vogt was also a repeat winner in the American League.
