Today is Walk and Roll to School Day in honor of Pedestrian Safety Month. The annual event encourages communities to consider walking or riding a bike to work or school as an initiative to make communities safer for pedestrians.
According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found 80 percent of pedestrians involved in a motor vehicle collision will suffer serious injuries. Michigan’s Office of Highway Planning says more than 100 pedestrians each year die in a motor vehicle accident. Pedestrians’ safety month reminds and encourages drivers to share the road with other modes of transportation.
