In high school volleyball last night…
- Hancock defeated L’Anse 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-10).
On tonight’s volleyball schedule…
- Houghton plays at Calumet. Coverage will begin at 6:10 or later on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- Hancock entertains Gwinn.
- L’Anse visits Lake Linden-Hubbell.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City journeys to Ironwood.
- Baraga welcomes Watersmeet.
- Jeffers hosts Ewen-Trout Creek.
The Jeffers boys and Houghton girls continued their domination at the Houghton cross country invitational yesterday.
- On the boys’ side, Houghton finished second to the Jets. Jeffers’ Cameron Anderson took first place, with teammate Landon Larson third. Benjamin Hemmer of the Gremlins was fourth.
- Calumet finished second on the girls’ side. The Gremlins took the top four individual positions, with Holly Cooke first, followed by Sela Niska, Jovie Williams and Norah Woodruff. Calumet’s Elli Harju was fifth.

At the Norway cross country invitational yesterday…
- The Forest Park boys’ team finished second to Florence-Niagara. William Hoffman and Hayden Smith of the Trojans placed sixth and seventh.
- Ewen-Trout Creek took the girls’ team title. Bree Besonen of the Panthers placed second individually, with Emma Besonen fifth.

Calumet remains tied for fourth in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters 11-player football poll this week. The Copper Kings improved to 4-2 with their victory over Houghton last Friday. Escanaba is ranked first, just ahead of Menominee – both are unbeaten. Kingsford is third, and Negaunee is tied with Copper Kings in fourth place. Bark River-Harris received honorable mention votes.
Calumet will not be playing football this Friday. The Copper Kings were scheduled to host Hancock, but the Bulldogs don’t have enough healthy players to field a team.
Norway dominated the eight-player poll, followed by Gogebic and North Dickinson. All three teams remain unbeaten. Pickford is fourth, and Lake Linden-Hubbell fifth – each team has one loss. The Lakes will host the Miners for Homecoming Saturday afternoon.
MLB
The Tigers and Mariners continue their American League Divisional Series this afternoon in Detroit. The series is tied 1-1. Jack Flaherty will start against Logan Gilbert. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Yankees host the Blue Jays. Toronto leads that American League set 2-0.
The Brewers shut down the Cubs 7-3 yesterday. Seija Suzuki’s three-run homer off Aaron Ashby in the top of the first inning gave the Cubs a brief lead, but Andrew Vaughn’s three-run shot in the bottom of the inning tied the game. William Contreras’ solo homer in the third broke the tie, and Jackson Chourio added a three-run shot in the fourth. Milwaukee leads that National League Divisional Series 2-0, with game three set for tomorrow afternoon in Chicago.
The Dodgers held off the Phillies 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in their National League series, which continues tomorrow in Los Angeles.
Comerica Park will be getting a new name. Comerica Bank is being bought out by Fifth Third Bank in an $11 billion stock deal. Bank officials say the name change will probably come after next season.
NBA
The Pistons opened their preseason schedule with a 128-112 victory over the Grizzlies last night. Cade Cunningham scored 20 points. Paul Reed grabbed 12 rebounds. Jalen Duren missed the game with a sore hamstring, and is considered day-to-day.
The Pistons continue their preseason campaign Thursday at Milwaukee. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks shut down the Heat 103-93 last night. Pete Nance scored 15, as Milwaukee sent 19 different players onto the court. That collection did not include Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has rejoined the team as he recovers from COVID.
NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Jaguars stunned the Chiefs 31-28. Jacksonville drove 60 yards in 82 seconds to score the game-winning touchdown with 23 seconds left on the clock.

The Lions will be without starting cornerback Terrion Arnold indefinitely. He’s suffering from a shoulder injury that may end his season. Detroit’s other starting cornerback, D.J. Reed, is already on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
