High School
The high school volleyball season begins tonight…
- Escanaba plays at West Iron County.
Gwinn High School will not field a varsity football team this fall. That’s causing problems for their opponents. L’Anse was scheduled to play the Modeltowners twice, and now has open dates on September 12th and October 17th. The Purple Hornets’ schedule now stands at seven games. West Iron County was set to visit them September 26th. The Wykons’ schedule is reduced to eight games. There is a chance that new opponents could be found for some or all of those contests, but the options are slim at this point.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League championship was supposed to have been played last night. Because of a shortage of players, it was postponed until tomorrow. Northern Driveline will face Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker at 6:30 at the Stanton field.
MLB
Gleyber Torres drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Tigers shaded the Astros 1-0 last night. With two outs, in the rain, Torres worked the count full, then took a low pitch from reliever Kaleb Ort to force Wenceel Pérez home with the winning run. Tarik Skubal turned in another masterful performance, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits over seven innings. He became the first pitcher in the Majors to record 200 strikeouts this season.
The Tigers entertain the Astros again this afternoon. Charlie Morton will start against Framber Valdez. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The long-awaited return of veteran pitcher José Urquidy is one step closer. Urquidy hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2023, following major arm surgery. He’s turned in four brief appearances for Detroit’s Lakeland farm team, and is now scheduled to start tonight’s game for Toledo.
The Brewers dropped two games to the Cubs yesterday. In their afternoon contest, Chad Patrick struggled in a spot start, and Milwaukee fell 6-4. Brought back from Nashville for the game, Patrick allowed five runs over five innings. Christian Yelich slugged his 26th home run of the season. In the nightcap, Brandon Woodruff suffered his first loss of the season in a 4-1 defeat. Woodruff pitched into the fifth, and was charged with three runs. Milwaukee’s only score came in the top of the first, when Andrew Vaughn singled home William Contreras.
The Brewers will host the Cubs again this evening. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Colin Rea.
Joey Ortiz left game two after fouling a pitch off his knee. It’s not believed to be serious, but he’ll probably be out for a game or two.
NHL
The Red Wings have announced that they will retire jersey number 91, which was worn for 13 seasons by Sergei Federov.

- Houghton Building Supply and Luigi’s vie for fifth place at the Gopp Recreation Area.
