Rookie Troy Melton struck out six over five scoreless innings, as the Tigers shaded the White Sox 1-0 yesterday. Notified that he’d be starting just 90 minutes before game time, Melton allowed just one hit and issued no walks. Sawyer Gipson-Long, Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest completed the shutout. Wenceel Pérez’ bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning drove home the game’s only run.
The Tigers visit the Twins tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Bailey Ober. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Gipson-Long rejoined the team yesterday after a stint on the injured list. Codi Heuer was sent back to Toledo to make room.
The Brewers mashed the Pirates 12-5 yesterday, and did it without hitting a home run. Milwaukee batters rapped out 12 hits – three of them doubles. William Contreras drove in four runs, and Christian Yelich plated three. Sal Frelick scored four times.
The Brewers have won 12 straight. They’ll take today off, and open a series in Cincinnati tomorrow.
