MLB
The Tigers split their twinbill with the Nationals yesterday.
Riley Greene and Jake Rogers each blasted three-run homers in the first inning, and Detroit cruised to an 11-2 victory in the afternoon contest. Greene added a second three-run shot in the fourth inning. Spencer Torkelson also homered. Zach McKinstry had four of Detroit’s 15 hits. Four Detroit relievers took the mound in a “bullpen” game, with Dylan Smith tossing the final three-plus innings to earn his first Major League win.
The remainder of the Tigers’ bullpen didn’t fare as well in the nightcap, as the Tigers fell 9-4. Jack Flaherty struck out nine over five innings, while giving up three early runs. Detroit came back to take a one-run lead, but the Nats plated six off Tommy Kahnle and Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the eighth.
The Tigers continue that series at Washington tonight. Dietrich Enns will pitch against Jake Irvin. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
After earning his first big league win, Smith was sent back down to Toledo after the game. Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy was called back up.
The “bullpen” start in the second game came after Sawyer Gipson-Long reported stiffness in his neck. He was pulled from the lineup, and placed on the injured list. Tyler Owens has been called up. Reese Olson is expected to return to the starting rotation this weekend against the Guardians, after missing time with an injured finger.
The Brewers split their doubleheader against the Mets yesterday. Joey Ortiz hit a grand slam as the Crew won the opener 7-2. Isaac Collins had four hits, including a home run, and Sal Frelick also went deep. Freddy Peralta allowed two runs over six innings, and claimed his ninth win of the season.
Young phenom Jacob Misiorowski got a reality check in the evening game, as Washington grabbed a 7-3 victory. Misiorowski gave up five runs in the second inning – four on a grand slam by Brandon Nimmo – and suffered his first major league loss. Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio homered.
The Brewers visit the Mets again tonight. Jose Quintana will start against David Peterson.
Milwaukee has recalled pitcher Craig Yoho from Nashville. Nestor Cortes pitched three shutout innings in his first rehab start for the Sounds last night. He’s recovering from an elbow strain.
The Tigers will have three starters in the upcoming All-Star Game. Online voting by fans concluded yesterday. Gleyber Torres will open the game at second base, with Riley Greene and Comeback Player of the Year candidate Javier Báez in the outfield. No Brewers player was elected to the starting line-up. Pitchers and reserves will be announced Sunday.
