MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Washington tonight. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Trevor Williams. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit reliever Matt Gage has cleared waivers, and been assigned to Toledo. Gage was designated for assignment to make roster space for Dietrich Enns.
The Tigers will send three prospects to play in the 2025 Futures Game. Catcher/first baseman Josue Briceño, shortstop Kevin McGonigle and outfielder Max Clark will take part in the game during the All-Star break.
Detroit’s Double-A minor league affiliate has a new identity – sort of. Some time ago, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver offered to rebrand a minor league baseball team, as long as the franchise accepted the result unconditionally. The Erie Seawolves were among the teams that volunteered, and Oliver chose them because, he said, Erie is nowhere close to the sea. The result? The Erie Moon Mammoths, which isn’t as far out of left field as one might think. In 1991, an Erie-area resident named George Moon discovered the remains of a woolly mammoth while diving in a local lake. The skeleton is now on display in the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, and is known as the “Moon Mammoth.” The rebrand comes with a mascot – a shaggy purple wooly mammoth – and a full branding array, with logos and other media. Moon Mammoth merchandise is already on sale. The new name isn’t permanent, but the team will don Moon Mammoth uniforms four times over the remainder of the season.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and visit the Mets tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Clay Holmes.
Reliever John Axford will be added to the Brewers’ Wall of Fame. Axford spent six seasons in Milwaukee. He ranks third in franchise history with 106 saves, and set the team’s single-season record with 46 in 2011.
NHL
Patrick Kane will play another season with the Red Wings. He agreed to a $3 million contract extension for next season. Detroit has also signed defenseman Albert Johansson to a two-year extension. The Wings traded forward Vladimir Tarasenko to the Wild, in exchange for future consideration.
NBA
The Pistons have brought in a new wing, agreeing to a two-year, $29 million contract with free agent Caris LeVert, who has played the past several seasons for the Hawks. That likely means Malik Beasley won’t be back. Detroit was about to sign Beasley to a three-year deal, but dropped that plan after word broke that he’s under federal investigation in a gambling probe. Veteran guard Dennis Schröder will not return to Detroit – he’s signed a deal with the Kings. Back-up big man Paul Reed will stay in Detroit with a two-year, $11 million contract.
Kevin Porter Jr. will remain with the Bucks, after all. Porter recently declined his $2.5 million option for next season. He and the team have agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal. Taurean Prince has also signed a one-year contract to remain with the team. There are reports that Bobby Portis intends to sign a three-year, $44 million deal to remain with Milwaukee, and Gary Trent, Jr. has agreed to a two-year deal.
WNBA
The WNBA is returning to the Motor City. Detroit has been out of the league since the Shock departed for Tulsa in 2010. The new expansion franchise is slated to begin play in 2029. The ownership group is headed up by Pistons owner Tom Gores, and also includes Lions owner Sheila Hamp, Lions quarterback Jared Goff, former Pistons players Grant Hill and Chris Webber, rapper Eminem and General Motors CEO Mary Barra.
