Gleyber Torres blasted two home runs, as the Tigers pounded the Reds 11-5 last evening. Riley Greene homered, and broke the game open in the sixth with a three-run double. Javier Báez also went deep. Brant Hurter opened, but gave way to Keider Montero with two outs in the first inning. Montero allowed two runs over five innings to get the win.
The Tigers entertain the Reds again this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start against Brady Singer. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Matt Vierling and Reese Olsen have both begun rehab assignments with Toledo. Vierling was hitless in two at-bats as the Mud Hens’ designated hitter last night. He’s working his way back from a shoulder injury. Olsen is schedule to start today’s game. He’s been dealing with an injured finger.
Freddy Peralta turned in six strong innings, as the Brewers shaded the Cardinals 3-2 last evening. Peralta gave up one run on four hits, and struck out six. Milwaukee collected just five hits, but broke open a tie game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly and an RBI fielder’s choice.
The Brewers host the Cardinals again today. Jose Quintana will pitch against Andre Pallante.
Aaron Civale got his wish. Civale requested a trade after he was demoted from the starting rotation to the bullpen. Yesterday, the Brewers sent him to the White Sox, in exchange for first baseman Andrew Vaughn and cash considerations. Vaughan started the season with Chicago, but was sent to Triple-A after 48 games, with a .189 batting average and five home runs. The Brewers have assigned him to Nashville.
To fill Civale’s spot, Milwaukee brought pitcher Grant Anderson up from the Sounds. They also recalled outfielder Drew Avans, who will fill in while Daz Cameron spends a few days on paternity leave.
NHL
The Oilers welcome the Panthers, as the Stanley Cup Championship Series continues tonight. The set is tied 2-2.
NBA
The Thunder held the Pacers to just 17 points in the fourth quarter, and pulled out a 111-104 victory last evening. The NBA Championship Series is tied 2-2, and continues Monday in Oklahoma City.
Running
Clayton Sayen claimed an easy victory in last night’s Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k. The former Houghton High School and MTU standout finished 30 seconds ahead of Luke Moore, from Hancock. Zebedee Swager from Houghton was another six seconds back, in third place. Erika Kazin from Houghton was the top women’s finisher, and ninth overall. Kate Abbott from Houghton was the women’s runner-up, 13 seconds off the pace.
