Today victory II arrived in Houghton. A sign cruise ship will return to the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Great Lakes cruises have grown in popularity in recent years. However, most ships stick to a sportsman’s favorite, lake Michigan. Visit Keweenaw executive director Brad Barnett says the region could expect more cruise ship visits in Houghton in 2026.
He adds part of the Great Lakes industry’s slow rollout in Lake Superior is attributed to the lake’s geography. The shorter shipping season means the cruise will end the season in Lake Superior sooner than in Lake Michigan. Avoiding late-season storms and rough waters.
Lake Superior is also hindered by limited number of stops along the northern shore. Cruises traveling to Lake Superior stop on the southern shore more frequently. Docking in cities such as Marquette, Houghton, Bayfield, and Duluth. Thunder Bay in Canada often marks the final stop on a Lake Superior voyage. The northeastern end of the lake lacks development and amenities that draw cruise travelers.
The Victory II will return to Houghton once more in 2025, docking in Houghton on June 18th.
