A 15 year old dies in a house fire in Calumet Township.
On Saturday, May 24th, just before 6 pm, the Houghton County Sheriff and area first responders were dispatched for a structure fire in Florida Location. Upon arrival, first responders found two residents outside, who reported a third individual was trapped inside on the second story of the home.
A Houghton County sheriff’s deputy and Laurium police officer entered the structure through the rear entrance on the first floor. Officials were unable to make contact with the individual inside the structure before being forced to leave due to heavy smoke inhalation. An investigation, following officials containing the fire, discovered 15-year-old Xavier Sever, deceased, on the second floor.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Local first responders on the scene included the Calumet Township Fire Department, Laurium Police, Michigan State Police, Mercy EMS, the state fire Marshall office, and Houghton County medical examiner.
