Laurium will begin to implement new garbage rules that were approved by the council in 2023.
Just before the village’s new rules were set to take effect, the village suffered the loss of the Department of Public Works garage. Village Manager Ian Lewis says that now the village has acquired a garbage truck it can now provide the essential service.
The village will now require all trash to be placed in a can, that residents can purchase from the village. Some residents have already acquired a village-specific can. Village leaders hope the new practice will limit animals’ access to refuse and reduce the probability of non-residents dumping trash in the village. The new can is 95 gallons in total and will create a uniform system for the village’s DPW team on pick-up days.
The new rules will also include new rates for pick-ups. Lewis adds that expenses to provide garbage services have increased, but new rates keep the service under the municipality’s control. The residential flat garbage rate will increase from 54 dollars to 60 dollars for up to two cans. The village of Laurium will no longer pick up garbage bags placed at the curb. Garbage bags must be placed in a can.
