In high school baseball yesterday…
- Hancock v Westwood – no report.
- Jeffers swept Ironwood, taking the first game 4-0, and the second game 7-1. In the opener, Cody Turner threw the first perfect game in Jets history, retiring all 18 batters he faced – striking out 13, and inducing four groundouts and one fly ball. Turner had a two-run homer in the nightcap, and Pierce Johnson got the win on the mound. The Jets have won 10 straight.
In softball…
- Houghton took two from Westwood, 12-2 and 19-17. Estella Soumis got the win in the opener, allowing just four hits. Ellie Hainault and Kenzie Collard hit home runs. Hainault had three hits and drove in four runs in the nightcap. Reagan Moyle and Kenzie Collard also had three hits each.
- Hancock routed Ishpeming 13-1 and 15-0. In game one, Sadie Biekkola struck, and also had two hits and three RBI. Emily L’Esperance had two hits including a three-run homer to lead the Bulldogs. Kaelyn Rouleau added two hits, as well. In game two, Lucy Biekkola was the winning pitcher and also had two hits and four RBI. Sadie Biekkola had 3 hits, including a home run. Sofie Freeman and Alice Larson also had three hits each for Hancock.

At the Hancock Invitational Golf Tournament at the Portage Lake course yesterday…
- The host Bulldogs claimed a narrow team win on the boys side, one stroke better than Calumet, and four better than Houghton. Calumet’s Robert Loukus and Hancock’s Drew Sturos each shot a 77. See full results here.
- Negaunee pulled out a narrow win in the girls competition, two strokes better than Calumet. Hancock placed third. Ady Crookham of the Miners medaled with a 101. See full results here.
In track and field…
- Houghton swept the Houghton County Invitational. Lake Linden-Hubbell placed second on both sides, and Calumet was third. On the boys side, Daniel Xie of the Gremlins won the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump. Calumet Matthew Frantti took the shot put and the discus throw. On the girls side, Emily Jokela from Lake Linden won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Houghton’s Tessa Rautiola claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. The Tigers dismantled the Rockies yesterday afternoon, taking both games of their doubleheader, 10-2 and 11-1. The Bengals plated nine runs in the first three innings of the opener. Spencer Torkelson drove in three of those runs, with a double and a single.Casey Mize struck out eight while giving up just one run on three hits over six innings. He earned his sixth win of the season.
In game two, the Tigers took command with six runs in the third inning. Torkelson had three hits, and Colt Keith homered. Keider Montero came up from Toledo, and tossed a gem – a run on five hits over eight innings.
The Tigers host the Rangers tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Patrick Corbin. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Tigers outfielder Chet Lemon has died. Lemon played the final nine seasons of his career in Detroit, after seven seasons with the White Six. He was the center fielder on the 1984 World Championship team. He devoted his later years to promoting youth baseball through his Chet Lemon Foundation. He had been in poor health for some time, suffering from a rare blood disorder called polycythemia vera, which led to a string of more than a dozen strokes. Chet Lemon was 70.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and visit the Rays tonight. Jose Quintana will start against Zack Littell.
Milwaukee sent pitcher Elvin Rodriguez back down to Nashville yesterday. Starter Aaron Civale will join him there, on a rehab assignment. He’s recovering from a strained hamstring.

In NBA conference semifinal play last night…
- The Timberwolves stopped the Warriors 117-93. That Western Conference series is tied 1-1.
Tonight…
- The Cavaliers visit the Pacers. Indiana leads that Eastern Conference series 2-0.
- The Nuggets host the Thunder. That set is tied 1-1.

In NHL conference semifinal play last evening…
- The Capitals outscored the Hurricanes 3-1. That Eastern Conference set is tied 1-1.
- The Oilers shaded the Golden Knights 5-4 in overtime. Edmonton leads that series 2-0.
