in high school baseball yesterday…
- Calumet v the Gogebic Miners – no report.
In softball…
- Houghton clobbered Iron Mountain 16-0 and 19-3. Both games ended after three innings because of the mercy rule. Estella Soumis allowed just three hits to get the win in game one. Ellie Hainault had three hits including a home run. She drove in three runs and scored three times. Kenzie Collard also had three hits, including a home run. Collard also collected three hits in game two, including a double and a triple. She scored four times, and drove in two runs. Regan Moyle got the win, allowing just two Mountaineers hits.
- Calumet and Hancock split a doubleheader. In the opener, the Copper Kings came from behind to claim a 10-9 victory. Hancock had surged ahead with six runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Copper Kings responded with three in the bottom of the fifth, and four in the sixth. Lena Myhren had three hits and scored three runs for the Copper Kings, and got the win in the circle. Romy Koskela had three hits and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs. Hancock came back to win the nightcap 7-3. Sadie Biekkola had three hits, including a home run. Lucy Biekkola held Calumet to three hits, and got the win.
- Ontonagon v L’Anse – no report.
Lake Linden-Hubbell won both sides of the Hancock Invitational track meet yesterday.
- On the boys side, Calumet finished second, followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, L’Anse, Hancock, Baraga and Jeffers. Calumet’s Brayden Krans won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the long jump, and Matthew Frantti of the Copper Kings won the shot put and the discus. Kalvin Kytta from Chassell took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Connor Kemppainen from L’Anse claimed the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.
- On the girls side, Calumet took second place, followed by Hancock, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, L’Anse, Jeffers and Baraga. Emily Jokela from Lake Linden won the 100 and 400-meter dashes, and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Ella Keranen from Hancock won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Colorado tonight. XXX will pitch against YYY. Coverage will begin at 8:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers dispatched the Astros 5-1 last evening. Tobias Myers pitched five innings of shutout ball, then left as Houston scored their only run in the sixth. Christian Yelich homered.
The Brewers host the Astros again tonight. Chad Patrick will start against Hayden Wesneski.
Milwaukee got good news about the knee soreness that caused outfielder Sal Frelick to check out of Sunday’s game. There’s inflammation, but no structural damage. He’s considered day-to-day.
NBA
In NBA Conference Semifinals last night…
- The Knicks outlasted the Celtics 108-105 in overtime in the opening game of that Eastern Conference series.
- The Nuggets got past the Thunder 121-119 in game one of that Western Conference set.
Tonight…
- The Pacers visit the Cavaliers. Indiana has a 1-0 lead in that Eastern Conference series.
- The Warriors open the other Western conference series at Minnesota.

The Red Wings will have the 13th selection in the upcoming NHL Draft, following last night’s lottery involving the 16 teams that missed the playoffs. The Wings were 12th in the pecking order, but slipped a notch as their history of bad luck in the lottery continued. The Islanders will have the first pick in the draft, which will be held in late June.
