The Michigan Department of Transportation will implement spring weight restrictions for state highways today. Effective as of 6 am, March 10th, all state trunklines, including those like M-26, US -41, I-75, M-28 or US 2 will restrict road load weights. On routes designated all season, there is no reduction to legal axle weights. Season routes will have a weight reduction of 25 percent for rigid concrete and 35 percent on pavement, with a maximum speed of 35 miles an hour. When roads freeze over winter, they begin to thaw in the spring, and melting can soften the roadbed beneath the pavement and make roads susceptible to damage. MDOT observes road weight restrictions each year to maintain road conditions. The department determines when to begin limitations depending on frost depth measurements near highways. For weight restriction updates or more detailed information contact the Michigan Department of Transportation at 1 800 787 8960 or online at Michigan.gov/truckers
