High School
The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys basketball season ended last night with a hard-fought 51-47 loss to Bessemer in the regional tournament semifinals. The Speedboys will face Forest Park for the regional title tomorrow at 1:00 at Lakeview Gym in Negaunee.
In girls district semifinals last night…
- In Division Two – Houghton fell behind early, and bowed out with a 52-36 loss to Gladstone. Eva Gerard scored 13 for the Gremlins. Lillie Johnson netted 19 for the Braves. Negaunee dispatched Escanaba 53-33. The Braves and Miners will play for the title tonight at 6 at lakeview Gym in Negaunee.
- In Division Three – Calumet rode an early lead to a 44-33 victory over Jeffers. The Copper Kings led by seven at the end of the first quarter, and the two teams played pretty much even-up after that. Kiirsi Johnson had 14 points for the Copper Kings. Taylor Heinonen had 11 points for the Jets. Ishpeming dispatched Westwood 57-50. The Kings and Hematites will decide the district title tonight at 6:00 at Calumet High School. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- In Division Four, District 98 – L’Anse bombed Lake Linden-Hubbell 81-47. Hancock ended Baraga’s season 49-37. The Purple Hornets and Bulldogs will play for the title tonight at 6:00 at L’Anse High School.
- In Division Four, District 97 – Ewen-Trout Creek ousted Bessemer 73-33. Ontonagon shaded Wakefield-Marenisco 54-52. The Panthers and Gladiators will play for the crown tonight at 7:00 at Wakefield.
- In Division Four, District 99 – Norway eliminated Forest Park 42-31. North Dickinson outscored Stephenson 63-47. The Knight and Nordics will decide the title tonight in Felch.
The Jeffers hockey team will face Cranbrook Kingswood in a Division Three state hockey tournament semifinal this afternoon at 1:30 in Plymouth. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s will take on Alpena in the earlier semifinal at 11:00.
College Basketball
Michigan Tech will host the GLIAC men’s basketball tournament this weekend. The top-seeded Huskies will face Northern Michigan in the first semifinal tomorrow at noon. Lake Superior State will take on Ferris State in the second semifinal at 2:30. The title game will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
The GLIAC women’s tournament will conclude at Grand Valley State. The host Lakers will face Wayne State in the first semifinal tomorrow at 2:00. Northern will take on Ferris State at 4:30. The title game will be played Sunday afternoon at 3:00.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens the CCHA Mason Cup tournament tonight at Bowling Green. The Huskies are seeded fifth, and the Falcons fourth. Game two of the three-game quarterfinal will be played tomorrow, with a deciding game on Sunday, if needed.
In the other quarterfinals, top-seed Minnesota State will host eighth-seed Lake Superior State. Sixth-seed Ferris State will play at third-seed St. Thomas. Seventh-seed Bemidji State will play at second-seed Augustana.
Northern Michigan did not make the tournament field.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines host the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum, then hit the road for a game at Mosinee tomorrow.
The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Ice Dogs tomorrow at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped their fourth straight game last night, 4-2 to the Utah Hockey Club. Both Detroit goals came in the first period, provided by Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren. Alex Lyon took the loss in net.
The Wings visit the Capitals tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Carter Mazur’s NHL debut for Detroit didn’t go as planned last night. After being called up from Grand Rapids, he suffered an upper body injury in his second shift. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Pistons visit the Warriors tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 8:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks host the Magic tomorrow.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and face the Orioles tonight. Keider Montero will start against Dean Kremer.
The Brewers shut down the Athletics 10-0 last night. Jacob Misiorowski struck out three over three perfect innings. Garrett Mitchell had two hits and drove in three runs.
The Brewers take on the Padres this afternoon. Bryan Hudson will pitch against Yu Darvish.
NFL
Longtime Packers kicker Mason Crosby will retire from the NFL today. Crosby is Green Bay’s all-time scoring leader.
